Today is the
Pohela Baishakh. One of the gorgeous Bengali festival observed in West Bengal, Asaam, Kerala, Manipur, Nepal, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil and Tripura. It is the first day of Bengali solar calendar. Bengali year is on the basis of lunar Hijri. Fatehullah Shirazi is the man who formulates the calendar. The first day of Bengali calendar is same as the Arabic calendar. This is the amalgamation of Gregorian and Bengali calendar. This calendar was introduced to ease the taxation mechanism during the
Mughal Emperor Akbar. So, few festivals tied with
Pohela Baishakh. In
Dhaka people try to enjoy this day in different ways. Couples of programs are arranged by different cultural organization. As this is the first day of new Bengali year 1415,
“Shuvo Noboborsho [Happy new Year]”
